This Veteran's Day: Remember

Veteran's Day is one of the things Canada does better than the United States. We call it Remembrance Day and I loved what an important part of our lives it was. At school, they distributed poppies for us to wear. We recited In Flander's Fields. And we remembered.

I had forgotten the significance of the poppy:

This is because the corn poppy was one of the only plants that grew on the battlefield. It thrives in disturbed soil, which was abundant on the battlefield due to intensive shelling. During the few weeks the plant blossomed, the battlefield was coloured blood red, not just from the red flower that grew in great numbers but also from the actual blood of the dead soldiers that lay scattered and untended to on the otherwise barren battlegrounds.
Of course, my dear husband never forgets a holiday.

Jamie: Today is Veteran's Day so I expect you to take really good care of me.

Me: Why? You're not a veteran.

Jamie: No, but I could be.

I agree wholeheartedly that Canada definitely does this holiday better than the U.S. I'm so glad my children experienced all the assemblies throughout their years here.

All my kids know of Veterans day is that there is no school and all the museums we wanted to go to will be CLOSED. Maybe I should take them to the cemetary.
You are right, US just doesn't do Vday justice.

You know it is a good Remembrance Day assembly when there are weeping moms in the back.
Uh... ya, that would be me. They are really good at not only remembering the soldiers of the past, but those from the present as well.

My kids don't know much about Veterans day either. I think we'll have to fix that today!!

I think it gets harder and harder to have the kids remember, after all the great wars didn't touch them at all...so it makes remembrance day more important.

I teach in Canada and agree with you: the best assemblies of the year are the Remembrance Day ones. Since I've had kids - and since the Afghanistan missions - I find myself especially moved, realizing that all those names, those faces are someone's son, someone's daughter.
Thanks for sharing.

I was really touched by what your husband said...so true! I wish our schools had made a bigger deal of Veteran's Day when I was growing up.

Hi CrazyCanuk, this is Crazee Chick...also from Canada! I just stumbled upon your blog today and just wanted to say 'Hi!'

I noticed that you have the Crazy 'call sign' too....do you think that's because we're Canadian, LDS, women, or mothers?

Hee...hee...
